Statement of intent :
I aim to produce the best of the best pictures to demonstrate and communicate my ideas and there meaning behind each image. At the end of this project I will choose and show my best most developed photographs and place them in this website so they can be viewed and hopefully my grades would be exceed my expectations thanks to my images.
For my theme I picked framing and the reason why I didn't pick light and dark not because it is hard but because I prefer framing and I am sure I could achieve a grade better than dark and light. At the moment I chose two photographers that have inspired me and I believe are popular in many ways and they are Robert Adams and Lee Friedlander. My theme is framing and I chose to this not because it was easy but because how I think it could be more effective than light and dark and actually have a proper effect or emotion on someone who sees it.
I'm going to use black and white because it will have an give a feeling that it was taken in past but it was actually taken in the present and that makes it more effective and powerful and it also creates this type of feeling that that the abstract of the past can create a stronger emotion than the future.
The Photographers I am interested in are Adam Burton for his west American countryside photos and Lee fried lander for his pictures taken while inside a car which makes it look like its telling a story about the journey of someone. The skills I want to develop is Shutter speed at at most because it's the one skill that I couldn’t perfect in and to maximise my skill in shutter speed I could take pictures that could possibly even amaze the photographers themselves.
Another skill I wanna develop in this project is that it's not much of a skill but instead a habit and its that I have to take lots and multiple amounts of photos/pictures because it makes more easier to find the perfect one than taking one perfect picture which isn’t even that perfect at all.I aim to produce the best of the best pictures to demonstrate and communicate my ideas and there meaning behind each image. Coggle mindmap:
My theme is framing, my first idea is to use mirrors to create an atmosphere of two different worlds, I plan to use both black and white and see which looks best. I enjoyed looking at Vivian Maier because she also used mirrors in her images and took them in the city. During this project i want to improve my photography skills and be able to analyse and develop my own images.
Vivian Maier mood board :
First analysis:
composition :
I researched about my photographer on the internet and I found this out. 'Vivian Dorophy Maier (February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009) was an American street photographer. Maier worked for about forty years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago's North Shore, pursuing photography during her spare time. She took more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles, although she also traveled and photographed worldwide.'
composition :
I can see that this image is fairly old because of the hairstyle and clothing being worn. The image is in black and white and was taken in Chicago. I can also see that there are two people in the picture and it has been taken inside a building, probably a hairdressers. The image has been taken at eye level which makes the viewer be drawn to the face, this is possibly something I could implement in my own work. There are strong leading lines going around the mirror making it stand out more and in the background the lines of the curtains create a contrast with the circular mirror. The soft lighting in the background contrasts with the harsh lighting on the face of the woman in the mirror which is a technique that makes her stand out more. The photographer has used a shallow depth of field which makes our eyes attracted to the reflection in the image. I do not think that a tripod has been used because it looks like an informal photo. Rule of thirds has been used in the background which contrasts with the central foreground of the mirror
connection :
This photo links to mine because I am also trying to use mirrors in my work. I think black and white suits this image however I plan to leave my images in color.
comment :
I like this picture because it is a casual picture with only 2 people in it but because it is the hair dressers you can picture a long queue people. I also like how the photographer has made it so that the camera is not in the picture. I think the meaning of this picture is that someone outside has caught the eye of the photographer because there eyes are not looking at the mirror.
second analysis
context :
'Alex Webb, born May 5, 1952, is a photographer known for his vibrant and complex color photographs. He has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1979. He's authored 16 books, including Hot Light/Half-Made
Worlds (1986), Under a Grudging Sun (1989) From The Sunshine State (1996)
Amazon (1997) Crossings (2003), Istanbul (2007), The Suffering of Light (2011), La Calle (2016), as well as four books with photographer Rebecca Norris Webb, his wife and creative partner--Violet Isle(2009), Memory City (2014), Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb on Street Photography and the Poetic Image (2014), and Slant Rhymes (2017).'

composition :
The focus point in this picture is the reflection of the boy in the mirror, the mirror has strong leading lines around it and creates a contrast of colors with the black next to white background. The boy in the mirror also creates a deep depth of field and a sense of scale because the boy is much larger than the other people in the image. Rule of thirds has been used to draw our attention to the boy on the bike and the colorful balloons in the background.
comment :
I like how the photographer has made a contrast in color and has created a sense of a different world inside the mirror. Although I am not going to go to mexico, the pictures inspires me to add a contrast in colors and create and effect of two different places.
connection :
The theme of this image is using mirrors as a framing techniques and it links to my work because I am also trying to implement the use of mirrors into my work and not in a studio setting. I also plan to keep my images in color.
plan for my first shoot
first shoot
This is my worst image because image in the mirror is out of focus and a person is in the shot.
Personally I thought my first shoot went decent but I wanted to try and take some pictures without a model in the shot, so I decided to try a studio shot and put up a white background and got some random items which typically could be find around a household.
second shoot :
In my second shoot I wanted to implement mirrors into my work, therefore I brought a mirror from home in and took some shots. At first I just used to mirror to capture the environment but coincidentally my fellow photographers were also working at the time so I decided to tag along and see how it goes.
Editing my photo:
I liked my previous shoot and i think the use of the mirror and people went well together so I decided to use a model again but this time I took a variation of inside and outside shots.
Third shoot:
Preparing for fourth shoot:

Evaluation :
For this project we started by looking at framing. I then did some further research and decide to focus on the theme of framing. The reason I decided to chose this theme is because it is a very simple theme however it can be used and manipulated in many ways to portray many different meanings.
During this project the part i enjoyed the most was developing my skills and images by manipulating my outcomes in Photoshop. I really enjoyed going onto the new adjustment layer and exploring the different tools that are there for photography. The one filter I thought was most effective was the black and white filter.
